Hualien is on the central coast of Taiwan – known for its beautiful Taroko Gorge and scary earthquakes. It's also home to what locals referred to as honey fragrant black tea. A style only came about in 1999. This year, we visited the family who coined the name - Mr. Gao and his wife Ms. Nien.

We tasted over 40 batches, and Batch #8 was one that sparked the most joy. A real highlight for this year’s trip and a tasting experience that will go down the memory lane. It’s similar to Hsinchu’s Oriental beauty in a way that the tea leaves are bug-bitten so it carries a honey-like sweetness. Ms. Nien's preferred profile is more stone fruit forward, fuller bodied, and it comes with a rich floral finish that's a real treat.

If there was one tea that represent our 2025 sourcing trip, this is the one, available here on its own. We hope you enjoy!

Shipping starts 7/2.

Available at the tearoom 7/11.
