Raisins, cedar, roasted sweet potato
Black tea · high oxidation · dark roast
Formosa Assam pays tribute to the early days of black tea production in Taiwan. In an effort to produce delicious black teas, famous cultivars (Manipuri, Kyang, Jaipuri) from the Assam region of India were imported to Taiwan in 1923 for cultivation trial and research. The TRES #8, Assam cultivar is an outcome of this effort, a chosen branch from a lot of Jaipuri tea trees.
Mr. Liao inherited an abandoned field of the TRES #8 Assam cultivar from his father-in-law. It was meadow of wildly grown tea trees, up to 5 meters tall from the normal 2-3 meters in height. This lot of tea trees are now over 50 years old and has been farmed without any chemical or fertilizers under the supervision of Mr. Liao for over a decade. Even weeds are pulled manually by the Liao family as their regular weekly outing.
Tapping into Mr. Liao's thirty-year long tea making experience, this black tea is deliciously malty and fruity with a flare of woodsy earthiness. The darker roast brings a sense of calm and ease. Like its heritage, this tea reminds us of a wise grandpa reading his favorite novel in an arm chair, he is warm and steady.
