Roasting Wuyi

We speak about roasted tea often, but it can feel quite abstract in concept. We often make the light roast vs dark roast coffee analogy, but coffee is not tea. The best way to articulate what roasted tea taste likes is to taste the exact same tea roasted vs. unroasted - this is your chance.
We started to carry the roasted Wuyi last year under the name Wuyi Roast. The producer happened to have an unroasted version during our visit this year, which we promptly snatched after the first tasting. Taste it next to the roasted version, so you can more easily isolate the additional aroma profile coming from the roasting process and decipher if roasting is your cup of tea.
This Wuyi variety is made by the same goofy cheery teamaker who made the Yilan #18 raw puerh-esque green tea from the Bounty Box. He inherited this lot of Wuyi tea plants from his family almost five decades ago. Older tea trees have more character. Their aroma profiles are branchy and hearty instead of soft and tender, defined characteristics instead of evolving profiles.
