Health Benefits of Teas & Antioxidants

The benefits of tea are generally associated with the high concentration of polyphenols, a natural organic chemical compound found in plants.  Some benefits of consuming these antioxidants include increased protection against diseases and conditions such as heart issues, eye problems, low immunity, cancer, premature aging of the skin, and more.

Polyphenols in Tea

Polyphenols defend plants against danger, and when we consume them, we gain added defense against disease as well. The polyphenols found in the tea plant include catechins, theaflavins, tannins, and flavonoids — all of which lend beneficial health effects to tea, as well as impact the flavor and mouthfeel of the infusion. The most potent polyphenol found in tea is called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and it is found in highest concentrations in the ‘shoot’ and two immediate young leaves on a fresh tea plant.
Among common beverage and food products, tea has one of the highest concentrations of these antioxidants. Studies have also shown that compared to broken tea leaves crushed into tea bags, whole dried tea leaves retain a much higher polyphenol content.
White tea, which is completely unprocessed, has been shown to carry the most anti-cancer properties compared to more processed teas.
